United States authorities believe the man accused of trying to storm the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner was aiming to target President Donald Trump and senior members of his administration, according to acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.
Blanche said on Sunday that investigators believe the suspect travelled from California to Washington, DC, by train through Chicago before the incident unfolded on Saturday night.
Gunfire erupted near the ballroom where the annual dinner was taking place, as Secret Service agents moved quickly to stop the suspect. Inside the venue were Trump, top government officials and hundreds of journalists attending the high-profile event.
Although authorities have not officially released the suspect’s name, several US media outlets identified him as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California. Reports also said he sent a lengthy note to family members shortly before the attack, strongly condemning Trump as a traitor, though without naming him directly.
Authorities Examine Writings and Devices
Law enforcement officials reviewing the suspect’s writings and electronic devices believe he intended to go after figures connected to the Trump administration. Blanche said the available evidence suggests the suspect set out to target people working in the administration and likely the president himself.
The attorney general also said the accused man is not cooperating with investigators and is expected to face several charges. According to officials, he is believed to have purchased the two firearms he carried in the past few years.
Trump told Fox News that the suspect’s family had warned local police about him before the event. He also said the accused had written what he described as an anti-Christian declaration. In his comments, Trump referred to the suspect as deeply disturbed and pointed to the content of the writings as evidence of hostility toward Christians.
Social media accounts believed to belong to the suspect portray him as a highly educated tutor and amateur video game developer with academic degrees in computer science and mechanical engineering. Those details have added another layer of public attention to the case as investigators work to understand his motives and planning.

Secret Service Responded as Shots Were Fired
The confrontation unfolded near security barriers outside the hotel hosting the dinner. Video shared by Trump showed the suspect running past barricades as Secret Service agents rushed toward him.
During the incident, one officer wearing a bullet-resistant vest was shot. Officials said the officer is recovering. The suspect was taken into custody at the scene. He was not hurt during the arrest, though police said he was transported to a hospital for evaluation.
In the aftermath, the area outside the venue was quickly flooded with National Guard personnel and other law enforcement officers, while helicopters circled overhead. The heavy response reflected the seriousness of the incident, especially given the number of senior political figures gathered inside.
Trump Revives Push for White House Ballroom
Trump used the episode to renew his campaign for a large new ballroom to be built on White House grounds. The proposal, which has faced legal obstacles and has not been popular in public polling, has become a major personal project for him during his second term.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump argued that the events of Saturday night showed exactly why presidents, law enforcement and security agencies have long wanted a large and secure ballroom on the White House grounds. He framed the incident as proof that current arrangements leave too much risk during major official gatherings.
The proposed ballroom, reportedly expected to cost $400m, has become one of Trump’s most visible infrastructure ambitions at the White House, despite the controversy surrounding it.
A Familiar Security Shock in a Divided Climate
The incident has added to an already tense political atmosphere in Washington. Trump described it as what he saw as a third attempt on his life in less than two years, but his public tone afterwards was notably less combative than usual.
According to the report, he responded by calling for unity and bipartisan healing, striking a more conciliatory note after an attack that could have ended in much greater tragedy.
For investigators, the immediate focus remains on building the case against the accused shooter and determining the full extent of his intentions. But politically, the incident has already reopened concerns about public safety, extremist violence and the security of high-profile political events in the United States.
