Two Pakistan soldiers, including a lieutenant colonel, were killed during a military operation in the country’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province after an attacker riding an explosives-laden motorcycle rammed into a security convoy vehicle, the army confirmed.
According to an official military statement, the incident occurred on Saturday in Bannu district, a region near the border with Afghanistan that has seen persistent security challenges in recent years. During the ensuing operation, security forces also killed at least five armed fighters, including one identified by the military as a suicide bomber.
The army said the leading security unit intercepted the attacker before he could reach civilian areas or law enforcement targets, a move officials claim helped prevent a potentially larger disaster.
Military Vows Continued Operations
In its statement, the military referred to the assailants as “khawarij,” a term it uses for banned militant groups, including the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Authorities have long linked the TTP to a wave of violence across KP and other bordering regions.
Officials stressed that operations against those responsible would continue without restraint, describing the attack as a “heinous and cowardly act.” The statement also highlighted the sacrifices of military personnel, reaffirming the armed forces’ commitment to maintaining national security despite ongoing threats.
Regional Tensions and Cross-Border Accusations
Islamabad has repeatedly accused the Taliban-led administration in Afghanistan of providing sanctuary to TTP fighters, a claim Kabul has consistently rejected. The TTP, while separate from the Afghan Taliban, is considered ideologically aligned and remains one of the most active banned militant groups targeting Pakistani security forces.

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have also surfaced in recent months, including a brief border confrontation last October, underscoring the fragile security environment along the frontier.
Bannu Remains a Frequent Flashpoint
Bannu district has long been a hotspot for armed violence, with repeated attacks on military convoys, police checkpoints and government installations. Security officials have reported a steady pattern of suicide bombings, armed assaults and targeted strikes in the area over the past few years.
The broader surge in militant activity in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa intensified after the TTP formally ended its ceasefire with the Pakistani government in late 2022. Since then, the province has witnessed a rise in coordinated attacks against both security forces and civilian targets.
Recent Violence Across the Province
The latest incident follows a series of deadly attacks in the region earlier this week. Authorities reported that two bomb blasts and a gunfight between police and armed fighters resulted in more than a dozen casualties across the province.
In Bajaur district, an attack killed at least 11 security personnel and a child, while several others — including women and children — were injured. These incidents highlight the escalating security challenges faced by authorities in KP as militant groups continue to launch coordinated operations.
Security forces have maintained that ongoing counterterrorism missions will persist in affected areas, with the military emphasising that the sacrifices of its personnel reinforce its determination to protect the country from armed insurgent threats.
